Microsoft’s Windows operating system has been extremely successful and has come to hold a dominant share in the desktop and server operating systems markets. This can be attributed to the fact that it has become a very flexible and powerful platform for an exceedingly large portfolio of applications that directly address the needs of customers in all regions, vertical markets and company sizes.

This flexibility is based on a complex architecture that is built on a set of processes and system services and a database that is a central point of control for the operating system, known as the Windows Registry.
