In 1940, a group of teachers in Vancouver, Washington – right across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon – pooled their savings into a single bank account so that other educators could borrow money. At a time when bank services weren’t designed for small savers and borrowers, the teachers’ inspiring “helping hands” approach created a viable financial opportunity for those in need.
